“Not sticking around?” Drew asked as I was saying my good-byes to the USAVA representatives at the inauguration of our new president, Barrack Obama.

“No, gotta get back to Sky Harbor tonight, I’m to meet with Graves and Whiz in the morning to arrange the logistics of the Team ferry to Tampa this week. Then I need to take 2 days off for a Reserve commitment, just found out about it, got a text from my unit commander on the BlackBerry.”
Drew mumbled something, I asked “What ?”, again he mumbled and I didn’t catch it. “I didn’t hear ya, Drew”.
“I said, I KNOW”.
“What do you mean you know? This is vUSNR stuff”, I replied as I shook Josh and Mike’s hands and said my ‘bye-for nows’.
“I ran into one of your friends while you were in the restroom, Admiral Thomas, an avid Cardinal fan by the way, and a fan of yours, he likes the way you handle the majority leader. Anyway, I told him that you were a vReserve pilot and just recently went into the F-18 program with Anthony Markham, anyways, we talked a little football and he mentioned that the Superbowl flyover will be 1 plane from each branch and I said that I know a pilot who would be a good candidate for the job, Will “Boomerang” Sanson.”
“Are you kidding me? Drew, don’t play with my emotions bro!”
“He said by the end of the ceremony you’d receive word that you will need to begin practice runs, flying a reserve F-18 out of NRB Atlanta.”
“This is awesome!”, I said as I gave Drew a ‘manly hug, a hug none the less, but it was ‘manly’.
“Well, there is a minor catch…you’ll be the back-up, some Navy top gunner is the primary, but you still get full participation in all the events.”
Wow, I was stunned. It was beginning to be a wonderful time to be me. My Cardinals have ended an anemic existence and are in the big game, I got to witness firsthand history being made, as a child of mixed races myself, it was indeed inspiring-even though I didn’t vote for him-the ceiling has been breached! Now I get to virtually do the fly-over for the Superbowl, that means I’ll get to be on the field during the big game, as the fly-over pilots always get sideline privies! We’ll take off and land at McChord, only minutes away and light up the sky as Ms. Hudson hits the final note of our national anthem!
I met up with Blaine and the stand-by crew at Reagan after a nightmare of a drive from the Capitol. Since I lost Syndy, Candy, and Jane; we’re still using the stand-by FA crew, but it’s been ok, USAVA has great people.

I got in to Cardinal Air to find a telex on my seat from Kevin:
****BOSS- WILL HIT 600 AS PLANNED. CHILL CHAMPAGNE? –SULLY****
“Wow, Cactus hit 600. Can you believe that Blaine?” I asked.
“Boomer, I’m a Charlotte guy, so I was half-heartedly rooting against us, but I have to admit, cactus is growing on me…figuratively, of course.” He replied.
“Well, thanks for your honesty, but for that comment, the time has come for you to get out there in your East coast weather and do your walk-around, smartass.”
As we were holding short I was able to determine from radio chatter that we were sandwiched between newly frocked Captain Minor and crew behind us and Senior Captain Duffy rolling out in a Star Alliance 319 and F/O Thomas out of DCA brought up the rear in an RJ.

"I really wish Steve and Dan would get these East metals painted" I complained to Blaine who just smiled at yet another one of my numerous cracks on the East side of the operation. I noticed on our rollout of Reagan, the crowds were still out in full force, I asked Blaine to take a few shots for me while I did the DCA dance.

Our run home to PHX was rather quiet; I had a lot of time to reflect on the last year. The election, the economy, the highs and lows of gas prices, of coarse the trials of USAVA, not to mention my bout with the brain tumor. It was hard to believe it’s a new year. What a year it has been. What a year is to come!
I brought us into 7R, a decent touch but I couldn’t help but to notice a few cracks in my recently repaired runway, I turned to Blaine and said “looks like your friends have been here recently.”

He smiled and then said, “Yeah, I heard Frank was in town briefly.”
“Figures”.

I left the University of Phoenix stadium feeling pretty jovial. We secured the contract to fly the team to Tampa in Cardinal Air and Anthony is going to give up Battle Born to fly in West coast press. Arizona Air will fly the team support staff and equipment. All set and inked. Now I need to figure how to break the news to Mike that I’m taking 3 crews and airframes off his schedule and then to Drew that USAVA is giving the “Hometown discount”. Maybe he’ll be happier when I tell him that maybe one day we’ll see the USAVA Dome in Glendale?
“Blaine, let’s take a run over to SNA so I can say “Hi” to the family before we set out on our next adventure. I want to see the look on the Wife’s face when I tell her that I overheard in the Cardinal’s front office that the Chargers have contracted with an agency to move the Bolts to Orange County.”
“I thought she hated the Bolts?” he asked.
“She does, that’s why it will be funny to see her reaction to having the Chargers in her backyard!”
Since Cardinal Air had to be “made ready” for her ferry run, we took AWE654 to John Wayne, it’s nice to get in a little Boeing time every now and then and a 757 is always a great pick.

I met the crew at the gate and quickly got on board to begin pre-flight on the 757. I wanted to give it a little extra time to get feel for her again. I haven’t had much time in 757 with USAVA, but had over 600vHours in the airframe with TWvA and SSA. I’ve done a couple of hops to Maui from PHX but still, it’s not as if I drive one everyday.

We came over Saddleback and approached Orange County. The old hangars at MCAS Tustin caught my eye as Frank and I had a conversation about them earlier in the week.

“Frank was stationed there when this was nothing but desert and Orange groves”, I explained to Blaine.
Our landing on 19R was spot on. After I turned us off, Blaine took over and I jumped on the cell to have the Mrs. come pick me up. It’s nice being only 3 miles from the airport.
Seeing the family is always great but always sad when it’s time for Daddy to head off on his next adventure.
I’ll pick up with us in PHX, time to ferry to TPA.
“OK, Blaine, feel like making the quick skip over to Glendale Muni?”
“Yeah, but why not just leave from here Boom?”
Blaine liked calling me by my nickname, I think it is an Air Force thing. However, it’s never the same thing twice…Boomer, Boom, Bam-Bam, Rang-o, etc…
“It was decided to avoid the mass hysteria that marching through the terminal would be too much for our ops, the TSA, and the team itself. Personally I think USC Matt would miss the flight because he’d wonder off and sneak into room with an FA or CSR or something…prima-donna playboy.”
“I guess you old guys stick together, huh Rang-o? Gotta support Warner, huh? Is there a wheelchair for him at Glendale?”
“Again my friend….smartass”.

We loaded the team and with U of P in the background we made our way down 1 and started our trek to TPA.

Company channel goes off. “Bangeroom, it’s Steeler Air for you. You’re in trouble now”
“3-6-2-5 for 2-4-3-3”
“Hey Will. Good news and Bad News.”
“Hit me softly brutha.”
“Good is we’re going to enjoy 2 rum soaked nights in the Islands together. Bad news is I have the end of your euphoric football season on Steeler Air right now and we’re seriously talking 6-pack!”
“Nice…on the trip to the Islands. What’s the deal?”
“Well one of the Rooney family members wants to thaw out a bit so we’re going to run over to the islands on an unsched and then charter a hopper for a day. Your sticking, Blaine is right-seating and I’m getting a head-start on self destructing my brain cells.”
“Roger that. Oh, and since our teams aren’t doing much trash talking this week, I will get it started…I had a dream last night, 31-27 Cardinals.”
“Care to make a wager?”

We arrived in TPA and taxied to the GA ramp. I shut her down and we waited for Steeler Air to arrive. We could catch a glimpse of Ray Jim (Raymond James) just behind the trees from our spot. Blaine filed for a trip to Santo Domingos and he was mapping out our Cardinals of the Caribbean trek. I called up some friends to arrange for out tour bird. Steeler Air was on final, time to toss on the Fitz jersey and ask the Ramper to let me marshal her in.
Our flight to St Kitts, in Cardinal Air by the way, was quiet. Drew spent all his time in the F/C cabin with his Steeler buddies.
“So, what’s up next for you Boss?”, Blaine asked out of nowhere.
“I don’t know, I suppose I’ll grab some Myer’s and a Coke, maybe even one in a coconut.”, I replied unaware Blaine’s question was much deeper than that.
“I mean, what are your plans here, at USAVA? I mean you’ve done it all man, what could possibly be next? What about your health, some folks are worried about that you know.”
“Wow, well…I guess I’m starting over again. I really don’t know. I have some things I’m working on, but I think I’ll just hang here at PHX. As for my health, I’m feeling really strong, besides being medicated for the rest of my life and my annual CT-Scans, I’ll be just fine. Good thing we don’t need to pass physicals at USAVA. Why, where is this coming from?”
“Just asking, curiosity mostly. What if Drew or Mike moved on? Would you go back?”
“Man…geeze, I don’t know. That’s a tough gig man, trust me. Drew still gets on my case about not giving him enough time in the COO role before handing him the keys. Hahaha. Honestly, no, I’m done with that level of things. Mike is the logical choice for CEO if that were to happen, but I see Drew making a move like I did, I mean going back to a lesser role, because USAVA is in our blood. You get this feeling that you must move out of the way to let others show their potential, for me it wasn’t too long after taking the helm that I knew that Drew and Mike were more than capable, so the choice of my COO would be solid for the VA. Drew knows this feeling now, he’s got a Staff that is good to go and the crew has many ‘diamonds in the rough’ that we don’t even know about yet.”
“Yeah, but what about you and your career here?”
“I’m getting to it…as I was saying, when Drew steps down, and one day he will decide that the time has come, I suspect the Board will approach Mike, it’s the logical choice, and there would be an upward movement among the Senior Leadership, rarely will they hire a CEO, COO, or Ops VP off the street. So maybe I’d make a run at Cactus when Dustin moves up. That’s about it though. I’ve given the thought about maybe taking on a Focus City but I enjoy being at Sky Harbor. I’d like to see Sully move up and out and then start grooming a new USAVA Staff member. That’s the key to our success, we tend to ‘home grow’ our leadership. The commitment and passion is there so the rest is just tapping into the leadership skill. Since the new USAVA has been in existence, every COO and CEO has started at the AHM or SM role and worked their way up, that’s the secret to our success. So, to answer your question, I have no plans or ambitions beyond Phoenix.”

All this soul searching made the flight go by pretty quickly and we made our approach in to Santo Domingo.

We quickly shut down, cleared Customs then Blaine and I went over to the GA terminal and arranged for our hopper. Blaine outlined the trek he planned out for me. He was going to hang out in S.D. while Drew, his buds, and I set out on the 2 day trek.
“From here, you’ll hit up St. Thomas and then down to St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, and RON in Guadeloupe in Port Louis. Then the next leg hit up Fort-de-France and Kingstown before making you way back up this way. A BSF in Ponce then over to Azua for some final sightseeing, then back here in time some Cubans and Cognac. Then you got to get you back end back up to ATL for your Reserve thing.”
“Remind me again after the Superbowl to throw away my BlackBerry, now that I have you, no longer need it”
“One more thing Bam-Bam, Mike sent a telex, he’s on his way, I’ll meet him here tomorrow on the CLT flight down. He wants to fire up a Monte Cristo and sip some ‘yac’. Maybe even do some hopping, want me to extend the charter and set up a light hop trek before we head back to Tampa?”
“Absolutely, tell him I’ll only have 2 days, then I got to get my butt up to hotlanta for this fly-over thing, but it should be an adventure!”
I arrived about 20 minutes ahead of everyone else to get our loaner Super King Air B200 up and ready to roll.

First up is breakfast in St. Thomas. We land and then shuttle off to the Galleon House. After a leisurely breakfast with the 2 of the Rooney clan and Drew, we set out for St. Kitts.

Drew sat up front with me while our tourists took in the sights.

“I gotta tell you about what Blaine asked me on the way down here last night.”

“What’s up?”

I gave Drew the Cliff Notes version of the conversation; he took it all in for about a minute then turned to me and said, “….
